随着英语的国际社会地位的提升，英语作为外语的学习对象是年轻化。鉴于经济条件及我国特殊国情，一直到中学阶段，学生的外语学校才被提到议事日程，而学习动机则是语言学习诸多个因素中最具能动性因素之一，研究表明，学习动机直接影响学生的学习积极性，自觉性及持久性，并最终影响学生的学习成绩。近年来，外语学习动机研究多元化，研究者们广泛运用诸如社会学，认知心理学，教育心理学等理论，进一步推动了学习动机的研究。
然而我国英语教学，尤其是农村地区，对学生学习动机给予足够重视，去发系统的理论知识来指导实践学习，所以本文在总结前人的基础上，从认知心理学，社会学及教育学三个层面**影响中学生学习动机的主要因素，并从教师的视角提出相应的策略，从而帮助初中英语老师有针对性地改进教学，促进提高学生动机，最终突破教育教学的实践性。
